  One-day Workshop on "Emerging trends in Solid waste management” conducted (16 June '09)
 
 
  

One day workshop on ‘Emerging trends in Solid Waste Management ‘was organized on 5th April 2009 by the Department with the support from Industry Institute partnership cell. The organizing committee was constituted to coordinate the various activities related to the workshop.

In the inaugural session Prof U. D. Kulkarni coordinator of the workshop, introduced the theme of the workshop with the focus on SWM in municipal councils serving the population less than one lac. Electronic waste is recent phenomenon which needs serious attention by the managers, researchers and teachers. Hon. Director Prof. S. R. Kajale appreciated the efforts and expected to develop continued interaction with Mrs. Almitra Patel, Member, Supreme Court committee on SWM. Dr. M. L. Waikar, Head, Department of Civil and Water Management Engineering and Dr. B. M. Patre Coordinator IIP Cell were present in the session. Prof. P. G. Jadhav proposed vote of thanks.

Mrs Almitra Patel gave a presentation on management practices for small cities with population less than one lac to overcome the difficulties due to short of manpower, machinery and funds for SWM. She discussed the methods of treatment like bio bins and composting, recycling of plastic and its use in road construction. The contractors working in various cities for SWM presented their views on the aspects mentioned by Mrs. Almitra Patel. They have put their difficulties before Mrs. Almitra Patel and sought advise from her. Shri Santosh Deshpande of Sanskrtiti Sanvardhan Mnadal, Sagroli (Nanded) gave a presentation on Working of Bio gas using kitchen waste at Sagroli hostel and shared his experiences. This is a novel method of treating food waste and generating wealth from waste with the advantage of reducing the waste. Shri Pramod Deshmukh Secretary of SSM Sagroli was also present in the workshop.

Dr. Y. V. Joshi and Prof. U. D. Kulkarni gave presentation on present situation, generation and tackling of e waste disposal with their effects on environment. They focused on necessity of policy initiative on handling and recycling of e waste and presented a case study of Banglore city.

Nanded Waghala Municipal Corporation had arranged a demonstration of road sweeper and refuse compacter for the benefit of participants. Shri Wankhede explained the working of machinery and advantages experienced by the staff. This had resulted into making of Nanded as dust bin free city to large extent. Participants asked the queries about the machinery which were answered by Shri Wankhede. Participants enjoyed the demonstration.

In the concluding session Dr B. M. Patre and Dr M. L. Waikar offered their comments about the deliberations. The workshop was attended 25 students, 10 faculty and 10 engineers and managers involved in SWM in small cities.
