About Center of Excellence

As a part of ambitious plan of government of India, NPIU has selected 30 best institutions in India through competitive proposals from all over India for establishment Center of Excellence (CoE) for collaborative and multidisciplinary research within specific thematic areas of regional or national importance.  The Center of Excellence will be supported with research funding of Rs. 5 crores under the World Bank Assisted Technical Education Quality Improvement Program of India (TEQIP)-II.   Based on the competitive merit, our institute is one among 27 best institutions selected for establishing Center of Excellence. 

The Center runs a multidisciplinary research program involving more than 20 faculty members and 14 research scholars from various departments of engineering and basic science of institute. The Center has started its functioning in its state-of-the-art Signal and Image Processing Laboratory equipped with all the ultra modern machinery set at par with any international research center. Apart from carrying out frontier research in the areas mentioned above, the center aims at creating technologies that can be commercially exploited by industries. The Center is also engaged in an ambitious plan for generating high caliber manpower and entrepreneurs in the field of Signal and Image Processing.

The key aim of center is to attract and tap the top class talent to carryout frontier research in Signal and Image Processing. The CoE is expected to contribute to the training of R&D manpower for industry. To achieve this there is need to recruit research scholars at least twice in a year i.e. in every semester through thorough competitive environment.

Dr. Manesh. B. Kokare is a Coordinator of Center of Excellence. He earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, India, in January 2005 and completed Post-Doctoral Research work at University of California Santa Barbara, USA from Aug 2011 to Sept 2012 under BOYSCAST Fellowship. Presently he is holding position of an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. He has published more than 58 papers in international and national journals and conferences. He received the prestigious Career Award for Young Teachers (CAYT) for the year 2005 from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, India.  Dr. Kokare is a recipient of  “BOYSCAST: Better Opportunity for Young Scientist in Chosen Area of Science and Technology” Fellowship for the year 2010-2011 from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to carry out his Post Doctoral research work at University of California Santa Barbara, USA. Recently, in 2013-14, he has been honoured with "Best Teacher Award" by Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University Nanded. Under his guidance five research scholars completed their Ph.D. and presently eight research scholars are working towards their PhD.  His area of resaerch is Image Processing, Computer Vision, Wavelets, Content Based Image Retrieval, and Diabetic Retinopathy. He is reviewer of twenty international journals. He is a life member of System Society of India, Indian Society for Technical Education, Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, and Member of IEEE.

Projects

Brain Tumor Segmentation and Analysis using Magnetic Resonance Images

As per Indian population census data, Cancer is the second most common disease in India responsible for maximum mortality with about 0.6 million deaths per year. India is a country with more than 130 crore population and the health services in are overburdened.  Currently for grading the tumor and gene mutation studies, biopsy followed by microscopic studies are required which is time consuming. Aim is to design machine learning based algorithms to provide second opinion to the clinicians for timely diagnosis and accurate treatment planning.

Objectives:

  • Develop an algorithm for Brain tumor segmentation when there is high similarity between tumor boundary and rest of the area outside the tumor
  • Develop an algorithm to predict overall survival of the patient with Glioblastoma
  • Develop Deep Neural Network based algorithms for Medical Image Analysis

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are being developed nowadays to prevent accidents by offering technologies that alert the driver to potential problems and to keep the car’s driver and occupants safe if an accident does occur. Basically, ADAS systems help the driver in the driving process to enable safe and relaxed driving. Many safety features are considered under an ADAS such as blind spot detection, pedestrian and vehicle detection, lane departure warning indication, cruise control, hazard recognition, collision avoidance, parking assistance, fatigue warning, distracted driver detection etc.


Smartphone Based Robust System for Plant Diseases Detection and Identification

According to a report of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), our world population is anticipated to hit 9.1 billion in 2050. Therefore, agricultural production needs to be increase up to 70% to fulfill the food requirements of a steadily growing population. Thus, an accurate and a faster detection and identification of diseases in plants could help to increase agricultural yield and develop an early treatment technique while substantially reducing economic losses. Recent developments in Deep Neural Networks have allowed researchers to drastically improve the accuracy of object detection and recognition systems. Proposed research presents a deep-learning-based approach to detect diseases and suggest preventive measures for particular diseases in plants using images captured in-place by smartphone camera devices which will help farmers to diagnose plant diseases.


Underwater Acoustic Signal Processing

Ambient noise variability is a critical challenge en­countered by multiple stakeholders, including sonar de­ signers and operators. The tropical waters in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), present random fluctuations in the surface parameters, namely the wind speed, surface tem­perature, wave height, etc. resulting in variations in the ambient noise characteristics. The site specific surface fluctuations in the tropical regions restrict the possibility of generalized algorithm design to mitigate the ambient noise impact. The work attempts to characterize ambient noise and to design mitigation algorithms for tropical littoral water.


Geospatial Hydrological Modeling of Watershed

Gradual de­ crease in soil fertility and productivity resulting in de­ creased agricultural productivity and consequent de­ crease of income of farmer's subsistence farmers of the reg10n. Our current work focuses on understanding the future impact of climate change on stream flow and sediment yield in area through climate change sensitivity analy­sis and also by future climate scenario gendered following the observed trend in historical rainfall

Bio-Metric Recognition System

Face Recognition has received significant atten­tion because of its numerous applications in access control law enforcement, security, surveillance, and internet communication and computer entertainment. The real-world Scenario have unconstrained conditions such as illumination, pose variations, Occlusion expressions. Thus, there remain plenty of challenges and opportunities ahead. A face Recognition system usually consists of a feature extraction stage and matching stage.To represent face, face feature discriminate inter-personal variation.  Two major categories of face recognition methods dominate recent research namely descriptor based and deep learning based methods.


Person Re-Identification  in E-Surveillance

The underlying challenge of the human re-identification problem arises from significant appearance changes, caused by variations in viewing angle, illumination and object pose. Different color responses, different camera viewpoints and parameters impede establishing correspondence between parts of the human body, while matching appearances. The majority of current methods use color as a feature. A data-set used to typically test people re-identification systems are consists of very small images with background included. When using color as a feature, most solutions do not attempt to remove the background, and hence color features will be picked up from the background.  Our solution aims to remove the background in order to only extract features from the foreground. Objectives:        

  • To build a descriptor which is able to represent people in a unique way.
  • To use this descriptor to build a matching method of re-identifying people, with the majority of people appeared in e-surveillance system

Retinal Image Analysis

Many important eye diseases as well as systemic diseases which lead to blindness manifest themselves in the retina. Retinal fundus images which shows presence/ absence of abnormalities are widely used by ophthalmologists for diagnosis purpose. Hence, Automatic retinal image analysis can be used for diagnosis of these diseases. Our current work focuses on the following areas:

  • Disease Analysis: Developing techniques for detection of abnormalities such as micro aneurysms, exudates, hemorrhages, cotton wool spots etc.
  • Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) of Retinal Images: Pathology I Anatomy based retinal image retrieval from large databases

Knee Osteoarthritis Grading Using MRI

Osteoarthritis (OA) also known as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis, is a group of mechanical abnormalities involving Degradation of joints, including articular cartilage and sub-chondral bone observed in most senior citizens.

Objectives:

  • To design an automated system for the Volumetric Assessment of Articular Cartilage in Knee OA using MR Imaging based on 30 segmentation.
  • Designing the quantitative grading system to grade severity of OA.

Development of CAD Tool for the Lung Disease

Computer Aided Diagnosis system used for the diagnosis and quantification of various lung disease, the basic concept of CAD is to provide assist radiologist for the efficient and faster diagnosis. Automatic segmentation and quantification are closely related to CAD. Automatic lung field segmentation is very important since it is fundamental step for the quantitative lung analysis in CAD. Quantification is needed for the radio-logical examination after diagnosis to determine the extent and progression of a disease. Our current work directed towards developing automatic lung field segmentation technique in case of severe pathological abnormalities Present in the CT scan images which will be used for the development of CAD tool.


Detection of Breast Cancer using Mammograms

The computer based detection can provide a second opinion to expert radiologists to final­ size their diagnostic decisions in a faster manner. Hence, the work undertaken aims at designing and developing simple yet compu­tationally faster algorithms for determining the likelihood of cancerous area and detecting the early signs or indicators of breast cancer from the chosen set of digital mammograms, with better sensitivity and specificity


EEG based Emotion Analysis and Recognition

The emotions are being studied not only to develop the Human  - Computer Interface (HCI) but to study what's going in a human mind involved in critical operations. For example, a pilot of aircraft driving in a bad mood is not only harmful to himself but also to other passengers on the same aircraft. Thus it is essential to propose a methodology to take away the participants from high arousal situ­ation to low arousal situation of mind. Emotion recognition from different modalities (e.g. face, motion, and voice) is, not only time consuming but also difficult to capture an adequately large number of data and can be unauthentic than EEG.


Content Based Biomedical Image Retrieval

Nowadays many hospitals are practicing the use of medical imaging to diagnose, detect and record the patients' history. Many techniques of medical imaging are available presently such as MRI, CT scans, X-rays, fundus imaging etc. Many hospitals at present have enormous data of patients available at their records and to handle so we need to develop some fully automated technique which can deal with such huge data and give us exact output that we want.

Objectives:

  • To developed a completely automated feature extraction method to assist in CBIR for Bio-medical Images.
  • Weight optimization of different feature extraction methods and use combination of different optimized feature extraction methods in CBIR for Bio-medical images.
