SGGSIE&T, Nanded is selected under TEQIP-III (1.3)

Motivation

•During 1980s, the Government of India and the State Governments had felt the need for revamping the Technician Education System in the country.

•The Government of India supported 25 State Governments and Union Territories of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Puducherry through three Technician Education Projects during 1991-2007, financed by the World Bank, which helped to strengthen and upgrade the system and benefited 552 polytechnics.

•The success of these projects encouraged the Government of India and the State Governments to seek more funding from the World Bank for systemic transformation of the Technical Education System with focus on Degree level Engineering Education.

•In 2002-03, the Government of India with financial assistance from the World Bank launched a Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) as a long-term Programme, to be implemented in three phases for systemic transformation of the Technical Education System.

•The first phase of TEQIP : (March 2003-March 2009), benefited 127 institutions in 13 States.

•The second phase of (TEQIP-II): (June 2009 - 31st July 2017).

The TEQIP-II was designed to meet following objectives:

Strengthening Institutions to produce high quality Engineers for better Employability
Scaling-up Postgraduate Education and demand-driven Research & Development and Innovation
Establishing Centers of Excellence for focused thematic research
Training of Faculty for effective Teaching
Enhancing Institutional and System Management effectiveness
Capacity Building to Strengthen Management

•A total competitively selected 191 engineering institutions are extremely benefited under TEQIP II also 30 Centres of Excellence have been established to cultivate thematic research in various emerging areas of engineering & technologies.

•Realizing the potential of socio-political and economic benefits from Higher Education in transforming India into a knowledge superpower, the Government of India has introduced the Third phase of Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (referred to as TEQIP-III).

•A special consideration for

–Low Income States and Special Category States and
–Support to strengthen few affiliated technical universities.

Objectives:

(a) Improving quality and equity in engineering institutions in focus states viz. 07 Low Income States (LIS), 08 States in the North-East of India, 03 Hill states viz. Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand and a union territory (UT) Andaman and Nicobar Islands

(b) Affiliating Technical Universities (ATUs) : System-level initiatives to strengthen governance and performance to improve their policy, academic and management practices towards affiliated institutions, and

(c) Twinning Arrangements to Build Capacity and Improve Performance of institutions and ATUs participating in focus states.

Project Scope:

•Only the Government and Government aided AICTE approved Engineering institutions/Engineering faculty/Engineering Teaching Department/Constituent Institutions of Universities/Deemed to be Universities and new centrally funded institutions in SCS will be the part of the project.

•Around 200 Government and Government funded Engineering institutions including Affiliating Technical Universities (ATUs) are selected under different sub-components.
